about the gathering

Was Octavia E. Butler right about the world we would inherit in 2024? This summer marks the beginning of Octavia Butler's seminal work Parable of the Sower. Set in a dystopian future of 2024, readers are faced with the harsh realities of economic decline, political tension and uncertainty, and a host of environmental challenges. In the midst of this we meet Lauren, a young girl who sets pen to paper to help us create a better way of connecting; with each other, with the Earth, and with God.

Join us this July as we embark on a journey with Lauren in the first Parable Books noted as thought provoking, realistic, and a timely reminder to take action. This journey will include 5 weeks of a slow reading of the work in community. In addition to traditional "book club" conversations, we will also have a chance to hear how scholars are interacting with Butler's archival work, as well as create collaborative resources for the topics discussed. We will end our time together bringing Earthseed ritual to life! You do not want to miss this Summer of the Sower.
